Danny, welcome to ‘Getting to know you’ and thanks for agreeing to answer the questions.

Something most people don’t know about me:

I used to have an underground driving license. Several years ago, I was working as an engineer in the world’s largest underground tin mine (which was located on the west coast of Tasmania). To get around in the mine, I needed an underground driving license.

What do you like to read:

The newspaper. I’m an avid reader of the SMH, and being a commuter to North Sydney, I get time to read it cover to cover and back again. I also enjoy reading the books that my wife suggests I read (which are often about being a better father and husband). And, I have plenty of time to read the Bible.

My first paying job:

Growing up in a family with a family business ( a bakery in Yass, NSW ) meant that it was easy getting my first job. Fortunately, it also turned out to be a paying job. But the job still wasn’t good enough to attract me into becoming a baker.

My favourite TV show:

We’ve only just started watching TV (after 14 years as a family without it). The shows haven’t improved much from 14 years ago. But, one show that does appeal to me is Mythbusters ( a show about urban legends). I like the skeptical attitude, the creative thinking and the explosions. The biggest improvement over 14 years ago is having a fast-forward button.

Most embarrassing moment:

I’m normally fairly “normal” and unflustered but a few months ago I ended up in a situation which made even me blush. In a moment of urgency, I rushed into the toilet area of a food court. As I headed for the cubicles, I was fairly surprised that there were no urinals in this particular toilet. As I sat quietly and contemplated the missing urinals, a realization dawned on me. I wondered how to get out of this situation without anyone else knowing what had happened. Finally, when I was ready and all was quiet, I quickly strolled out of the toilet and the food court without a backward glance. Now, I check the signs much more carefully.

What on earth inspires me:

I think that one of the most wonderful things that God tells us is that we are significant and that, with his help, we can make a difference. The Bible is full of examples about people who made a difference in the lives of others and instructions about how we can make a positive impact in this world. Being part of a family also means having many opportunities to serve and encourage others.
